Spiders of Good Fortune*

Original creations by Pam Pickering, our little crystal spiders all have original Italian glass lampwork bodies made by Houston bead artist, Don Hohensee. Each spider has 16 Swarovski Austrian crystal bi-cones on the legs, so when you hang it in a sunny window, the spider will sparkle like a brilliant little star, casting tiny rainbows on your window sill.

All spiders include a gift box with suction cup, two great spider stories ("The Legend of the Christmas Spider" and "The Legend of the King and the Cave Spider"), and a bit about how we create these wonderful Spiders of Good Fortune.

We’ve added many more samples of our spiders so that you can see some of the varied colors and patterns. No two spiders will ever be the same but if you find a color and pattern you like, Don will create a unique spider body just for you. Custom spiders will be increasingly more difficult to make as we get nearer to the Holidays so order your spiders as soon as possible.

Below are the two spider legends that we include with each spider. We hope that you enjoy them both.

Legend of the Christmas Spider

A long, long time ago on the eve before Christmas, a mother was busily cleaning the house. Not a speck of dust was left anywhere. Even the little spiders had been banished from their cozy homes high up on the ceiling to the farthest corner of the forgotten attic.

When all was quiet that night the spiders quickly crept down and into the living room. In amazement they saw a tree towering so high that they couldn't see the ornaments on top. All night long, they danced in the branches, and every place they went left a trail of dusty, gray web.

When at last they had inspected every bit of the Christmas tree, it was shrouded in the dusty gray of spider webs. That was the way Father Christmas found it a few hours later. He smiled as he saw the happy spiders, but he also thought of how sad the mother would be over the dusty tree. He reached out his hand just as the sun came through the window and touched the tree. All the webs started to sparkle and shine turning into shimmering strands of silver and gold. The tree glistened in greater beauty than ever before! And that was when tinsel was born.

And also because of that special night it has become good luck to hang a single spider among the decorations on your tree.

The Legend of the King and the Cave Spider Nearly 700 years ago the King of Scotland and his men were defeated in huge battle against the English. For three months they hid in a cave to avoid the enemy. The King of Scotland was at the lowest point in his life. He even considered leaving the country and never coming back.

Each day as the King contemplated his future he watched a spider trying to build his web at the cave entrance. The damp rocks made it nearly impossible. The spider fell down time after time but finally succeeded with his web. Impressed with the spider’s determination, the King decided to try again too. As the legend goes, on the morning before the fight, the King of Scotland stood before his men and said, “Men, we are going back into battle because if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.” They did, and won the mighty battle even though they were outnumbered ten to one.

There are many spider legends that tell of spiders who bring prosperity, health, wisdom and harmony. We believe them all and add another, rainbows! Hang your crystal garden spider in any sunny window, or set him right on the window sill and let the sunshine do the rest.
